Press release

Florian Harms is now editor-in-chief of t-online.de

On 1 September 2017, Florian Harms (43) will become the new editor-in-chief and take over the management of t-online.de, Germany’s most widely read news platform. In his role as editor-in-chief of t-online, Florian Harms will also be taking over the duties of managing director at Ströer News Publishing GmbH along with Marc Schmitz. Until Florian Harms takes up his post as editor-in-chief, Arne Henkes, Director Content at the Ströer Content Group, will assume the position on an interim basis.

“Florian Harms is an excellent and experienced editor-in-chief, who will bring t-online.de into the future with confidence in terms of its content and its visual design,” says Christian Schmalzl, Co-CEO of Ströer. “He has everything that a good digital journalist needs. With him at the helm, we will expand the most widely read platform in Germany and make it the biggest digital media brand in the country.”

“I am really looking forward to this exciting role and working with the colleagues at t-online.de and Ströer,” Florian Harms says. “Together, we want to systematically expand t-online.de and make it a leading journalistic voice. To do this, we are focussing on high-quality news journalism, useful services, commercial success and a systematic digital approach.”

Florian Harms studied Islamic Studies and Political Science in Freiburg and Damascus, wrote his doctoral thesis on Islamic online missionary groups, trained with the Neue Zürcher Zeitung newspaper and wrote for Süddeutsche Zeitung and taz, among other publications. Since May 2004, he has held various positions at SPIEGEL ONLINE, and was editor-in-chief of the news platform from January 2015 to December 2016.

When the platform moved to Berlin, Ströer launched the unique multi-screen-multi-touchpoint concept. This is enabling Ströer’s successive realisation of its Publishing 3.0 vision: integrated, multimedia storytelling across all devices (desktop, mobile and tablets), channels (websites, apps and social media) and media (online and public video) that is tailored to current events, trends and ever-changing user habits. The editorial team acts as an innovative source of inspiration and guidance, and is constantly driving the development of interactive projects and exclusive content.
